How to convert images to a PDF

  1. Choose your images, or drag them onto the page. Use the arrows to put them in order and remove any you don't want.
  2. Pick a page size (fit to image, A4 or US Letter), orientation and margin.
  3. Press Create PDF, then download the file.

Making a PDF from images without uploading them

A PDF can hold a JPG exactly as it is, which is why converting a photo to PDF doesn't have to lose quality. Your browser builds the document with pdf-lib: each image becomes one page, and JPG data is copied in without being decoded or recompressed.

Phone photos often carry an EXIF orientation flag instead of being stored upright. PDF viewers ignore that flag, so such images are turned upright first and saved again as JPG. Images in other formats are converted by your browser to PNG, which PDF supports with full quality and transparency.

Tips

  • Choose Fit to image for photos and scans you want to keep at their own proportions, or A4 or US Letter when the PDF will be printed.
  • To convert the other way, use PDF to JPG.
  • To add this PDF to others, use Merge PDF.
  • Mostly screenshots? PNG to PDF explains how transparency and sharp text are kept.

Questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. The PDF is built in your browser with the open-source pdf-lib library. Your images are read from your device and the PDF is created on your device.

Are JPG images recompressed?

No. A JPG is placed into the PDF as it is, so there is no extra quality loss and the file stays small. The exception is a JPG with an EXIF rotation flag, such as many phone photos: it is turned upright and saved again as a high-quality JPG (quality 92) so it appears the right way up.

What do the page size options do?

Fit to image makes each page the size of its image, using one pixel per point, plus any margin. A4 and US Letter use a fixed page and scale each image to fit inside the margins, centred, keeping its proportions. With Auto orientation each page is portrait or landscape to match its image.

What happens to PNG images with transparency?

Transparency is kept: PNG images are embedded with their alpha channel, so the page colour shows through. WebP, GIF and BMP images are first converted to PNG by your browser.

Are there limits?

You can add up to 200 images of up to 50 MB each. Very large batches are limited by your device's memory.

Can I change the order afterwards?

Yes, before you create the PDF. Use the up and down arrows next to each image. To rearrange a PDF you have already made, use Reorder pages.
