One PDF at a time, up to 200 MB, and up to 200 pages per run. Each page image is limited to 10,000 pixels on its longest side and about 100 million pixels in total; larger pages are rendered at a lower resolution and the result says so. Password-protected PDFs can't be opened.
How to convert a PDF to JPG
- Choose a PDF file, or drag it onto the page.
- Pick JPG or PNG, a resolution (72, 150 or 300 dpi) and which pages you want.
- Press Convert. One page downloads as a single image; several pages download as a zip.
Converting PDF pages to images in your browser
A PDF page is a list of drawing instructions, not a picture. To get an image, the page has to be drawn at a chosen size. Your browser does this with pdf.js onto a canvas at the resolution you pick, one page at a time, then saves the canvas as a JPG or PNG file.
Resolution is measured in dots per inch. A PDF page is defined in points, 72 to the inch, so 150 dpi draws each page a little over twice as wide as its nominal size. Choose JPG for photographs and smaller files, or PNG when you want crisp text and edges with no compression artefacts.
Tips
- Going the other way? JPG to PDF builds a PDF from images.
- Only need a few pages as a PDF rather than images? Use Extract pages.
- Resize or recompress the images afterwards with Compress image.
Questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The pages are drawn in your browser with the open-source pdf.js library and saved from there. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can it make PNG as well as JPG?
Yes. Choose PNG for a lossless image, which suits text, line art and screenshots. JPG files are smaller and suit pages with photographs. Both use a white background, because a PDF page has no transparent paper.
Which resolution should I choose?
72 dpi gives screen-size images, 150 dpi is a good size for reading and sharing, and 300 dpi suits printing. Higher resolution means larger images and slower conversion.
Why was my page rendered at a lower resolution?
Browsers can't draw arbitrarily large canvases. Each image is limited to 10,000 pixels on the longest side and about 100 million pixels overall, so a very large page, such as a poster, is scaled down to fit. The result tells you when this happened.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Yes. A scanned page is already a picture; this tool draws it at the resolution you choose. Choosing a higher resolution than the scan can't add detail.
Can I convert only some pages?
Yes. Choose Some pages and enter pages or ranges such as 1-3, 5. Pages are counted from 1.
