How to edit PDF metadata

  2. Change the fields you want, or press Remove all metadata to clear them.
  3. Press Save changes and download the updated PDF.

What PDF metadata is, and why you might change it

Every PDF can carry a few descriptive fields: a title, an author, a subject, keywords, the program that created it and the dates it was made and last changed. They live in the document information dictionary, and many programs also write a second copy as an XMP packet, an XML block attached to the file.

These fields show up in file properties, search results and browser tabs, so a wrong title or a forgotten author name can be awkward when a document leaves your hands. This tool reads them in your browser, lets you correct them, or clears them. Page content is never altered.

Tips

  • Cleaning metadata from photos instead? Use Remove EXIF.
  • Combining files? Merge PDF creates a new document, so set the title afterwards here.

Questions

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The properties are read and rewritten in your browser with the open-source pdf-lib library. Nothing is sent to a server.

What does Remove all metadata do?

It deletes every entry in the document information dictionary (title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer and the dates) and removes the document's embedded XMP metadata stream, which many programs write as a second copy of the same information. It does not touch the page content, so text, images and any visible names on the pages stay. Some files carry other private data, such as comments or form values, that this tool doesn't change.

Will the saved file have the same name?

Yes. The download uses the original name, such as report.pdf, so check that you are opening the new copy. Your original file is not changed.

Why is the XMP option ticked when I edit fields?

Many viewers and search tools read the XMP stream first. If it stays in the file it can keep showing the old title or author, so the edit would seem to have no effect. Ticking the option removes that stream when you save.

Does saving change other properties?

Only the fields you edit are changed. The tool does not add its own producer name or modification date unless you set them yourself.

Can it edit the dates?

Yes. Untick Keep the original dates and set new values in your local time. Leave it ticked and the dates stay as they are.
