One PDF at a time, up to 200 MB. Password-protected PDFs can't be edited. Numbers are drawn in Helvetica.
How to add page numbers to a PDF
- Choose a PDF file, or drag it onto the page.
- Pick the position, the number format and the starting number. Skip the cover page or limit the numbering to some pages if you need to.
- Press Add page numbers, then download the numbered PDF.
Adding page numbers without uploading the PDF
Page numbers are just small pieces of text drawn on top of each page. Your browser can do that directly: it opens the PDF with pdf-lib, adds a line of Helvetica text to every page you chose, and writes a new file. The original page content is left alone.
Each page can have its own size, crop box and rotation, so the position is worked out per page. Margins are measured from the edge of the visible area, and on a page stored sideways the number is turned with it so it still reads upright where you expect it.
Tips
- Putting several files together first? Use Merge PDF, then number the result so the numbers run straight through.
- Need a mark across the page rather than a number? Try Watermark PDF.
- Pages in the wrong order? Fix that with Reorder pages before numbering.
Questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The numbers are drawn into a copy of your PDF by the open-source pdf-lib library, inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
How do I leave the cover page without a number?
Tick Skip the first page. The starting number then applies to the first page that is numbered, so the second page gets the starting number you set. If you would rather have page 2 show "2", set the starting number to 2.
What does "Page 1 of N" use for N?
N is the last number used. When every page is numbered and you start at 1, that is the total page count. If you skip the cover or number only some pages, it is the starting number plus the count of numbered pages minus one.
Will the numbers be upright on rotated pages?
Yes. If a page is stored with a 90, 180 or 270 degree rotation, the number is placed relative to how the page appears and turned with it, so it reads upright in the position you chose. The number is placed inside the page's visible area (its crop box, when it has one).
Can I change the font?
Not in this tool. Numbers are drawn in Helvetica, a standard PDF font, so they work everywhere and add very little to the file size.
Does it change the rest of the PDF?
The existing page content is left as it is and the numbers are added on top. Document information such as the title and author is not changed.
