Convert image

Change images between PNG, JPEG and WebP, one at a time or in a batch.

Your files never leave your device

Drop images here

PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF. Or drag them anywhere on this page.

Opened on this device. Nothing is uploaded.

Up to 50 images per batch, 50 MB each, about 100 megapixels each. Input: PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF (first frame), BMP, AVIF where your browser can open it.

How to convert an image

  1. Choose your images, or drag them onto the page.
  2. Pick the format to convert to. For JPEG, choose a background colour for transparent areas and a quality.
  3. Press Convert, then download each file or a .zip.

Converting image formats in your browser

An image file is a container plus a compression method. Converting means decoding the pixels from the old format and encoding them again in the new one. Your browser already has decoders and encoders for the common formats, so the conversion can run entirely on your device.

PNG stores every pixel exactly and supports transparency, which makes it larger for photos. JPEG and WebP are lossy: they trade a little exactness for much smaller files, controlled by the quality setting. Converting a JPEG to PNG does not restore detail the JPEG already lost; it only stores the current pixels without further loss.

Tips

  • After converting, shrink the file with Compress image.
  • Changing the pixel dimensions instead? Use Resize image.
  • Starting from a vector drawing? SVG to PNG renders it at any size.

Questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in your browser on your device, and nothing is sent to a server.

What happens to transparency when I convert to JPEG?

JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick (white by default). PNG and WebP keep transparency.

Which format should I choose?

PNG is lossless and good for graphics, screenshots and anything with sharp edges or transparency. JPEG is the most widely supported format for photos. WebP is usually smaller than both at similar quality and is supported by current browsers.

Why does it say my browser can't save WebP?

Some browsers, Safari in particular, can open WebP but cannot create it. The tool checks what the browser actually produced and tells you, rather than giving you a mislabelled file. Choose PNG or JPEG instead, or use another browser.

Does it convert animated GIFs?

Only the first frame is converted. Animation is not kept.

Is EXIF data kept?

No. The converted file has no camera or GPS metadata, and it is saved in the orientation the image displays in.
