WebP to PNG

Turn WebP images, such as pictures saved from a web page, into PNG files that older apps and editors can open.

Your files never leave your device

Drop WebP files here

.webp images, one or many. Or drag them anywhere on this page.

Opened on this device. Nothing is uploaded.

Up to 50 images per batch, 50 MB each, about 100 megapixels each. Animated WebP files are converted from their first frame.

How to convert WebP to PNG

  1. Choose your .webp files, or drag them onto the page.
  2. Leave the output on PNG to keep transparency and every pixel, or pick JPG for a smaller photo.
  3. Press Convert, then download each PNG or all of them as a .zip.

Why WebP images need converting

WebP is a web format: it has a lossy mode for photos and a lossless mode for graphics, both with transparency, and it makes pages load faster. Outside the browser, support is patchier. A WebP saved from a shopping site or a news article may refuse to open in an older editor, attach to a form or print from a desktop app.

This page decodes the WebP with your browser's own decoder, which already understands both modes and transparency, and writes the pixels out as PNG. Nothing is uploaded, so it also works for images you would rather not send to a conversion server.

Tips

  • Converting a photo? JPG gives a far smaller file than PNG; switch the output above, or use PNG to JPG later.
  • Need the image as text for HTML or CSS instead? Use Image to Base64.
  • Other formats, including AVIF and BMP, are handled by Convert image.

Questions

Why did the image I saved from a website turn out to be WebP?

Many sites, and the image services behind them, send WebP to browsers that support it because it is usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG or PNG at the same quality. When you save the picture you get that WebP, even if the page once used a JPG or PNG.

Which apps can't open WebP?

Current browsers, Windows, macOS and most phone galleries open it, but older photo editors, some office and print software, and many upload forms still reject it. Converting to PNG gives you a file every program understands.

Is any quality lost?

Converting to PNG adds no loss: PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly. If the WebP was saved in lossy mode, the detail it already gave up is not restored, and a lossy WebP photo will make a much larger PNG. Lossless WebP graphics convert to PNG of similar quality and a somewhat larger size.

Is transparency kept?

Yes, when you convert to PNG. If you choose JPG, transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick.

What about animated WebP?

Only the first frame is converted, as a still image. PNG here does not carry animation.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes the WebP and writes the PNG on your device.
