JPG to PNG

Save JPG photos as lossless PNG files, ready for editing without another round of JPEG compression.

Your files never leave your device

Drop JPG files here

JPG or JPEG photos, one or many. Or drag them anywhere on this page.

Opened on this device. Nothing is uploaded.

Up to 50 images per batch, 50 MB each, about 100 megapixels each. JPG and JPEG in; other formats are accepted too.

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Choose your JPG or JPEG files, or drag them onto the page.
  2. Leave the output on PNG. Phone photos are turned upright automatically.
  3. Press Convert, then download each PNG or all of them as a .zip.

What changes when a JPG becomes a PNG

Every time a JPG is opened, edited and saved again, the JPEG encoder throws away a little more detail, and the artefacts build up: smeared edges, blocky skies, halos around text. Converting once to PNG freezes the image in its current state, so later edits cost nothing more.

The trade-off is size. JPG was designed for photographs and PNG was not, so expect a much larger file. If an upload form or website asks for PNG, this is the way to meet it; if it accepts either, sending the original JPG is usually better.

Tips

  • Need the PNG smaller afterwards? Compress image can reduce its colours, which suits graphics more than photos.
  • Want to strip location data but keep a JPG? Use Remove EXIF data.
  • For the reverse, use PNG to JPG.

Questions

Does converting to PNG improve the quality?

No. The detail a JPG lost when it was first saved is gone for good, and PNG stores the pixels as they are now, blocky edges and all. What PNG does is stop any further loss: you can edit and save it as many times as you like without the image degrading.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

PNG compression is lossless, and photographs have too much fine variation for it to squeeze well. Three to ten times the JPG's size is normal. That is the price of a lossless copy; if you only need to view or share the photo, the JPG is the better file.

When is PNG worth it?

When you will edit the image several times, add text or a cut-out that needs transparency later, or need a format an app requires. For screenshots that were saved as JPG by mistake, PNG also keeps any further edits crisp.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

Not by itself. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque. Converting only makes transparency possible for later edits; removing a background is a separate job.

Are my photos uploaded or their EXIF kept?

Nothing is uploaded: the conversion runs in your browser. Camera and GPS metadata is not copied into the PNG, and photos with an orientation flag are saved the right way up.
