HEIC to JPG
Turn photos saved as HEIC, the format iPhones use, into JPG files that open everywhere. The conversion runs on your device, so your photos are not uploaded.
Your files never leave your device
Drop HEIC photos here
.heic or .heif photos, one or many. Or drag them anywhere on this page.
Opened on this device. Nothing is uploaded.
90 is a good choice for photos. Lower numbers make smaller files with a little less detail.
Up to 50 photos per batch, 50 MB and 50 megapixels each. Works with the ordinary 8-bit HEIC photos of iPhones and most Android phones. HEIC files with 10-bit colour or lossless coding, which some cameras and editing apps make, can't be read. Camera and location details are not copied to the JPG.
How to convert HEIC to JPG
- Choose your HEIC photos, or drag them onto the page.
- Set the JPG quality. 90 is a good choice for photos; lower numbers make smaller files.
- Press Convert to JPG, then download each photo or a .zip with all of them.
What HEIC is, and how this tool reads it
HEIC is the picture format iPhones have saved photos in since iOS 11, and many Android phones use it too. It stores a photo in about half the space of a JPG at a similar look, by using the same compression as modern video, called HEVC. The price is compatibility: older Windows versions, many web forms, print shops and photo editors still can't open it, which is why you end up needing a JPG.
Making a JPG from a HEIC takes two steps: decode the HEVC picture, then encode it again as JPEG. Your browser can do the second step by itself, but most browsers can't do the first. So this page carries a small decoder written in JavaScript, the open-source ts-heic library. It reads the file's container, decodes the picture (phones store big photos as a grid of tiles, which it decodes one by one and joins), turns the result upright, and hands the pixels to your browser's own JPEG encoder. It runs in a background worker, so the page stays responsive while it works.
A JPG is usually bigger than the HEIC it came from, because JPEG compresses less efficiently, and converting is one way: keep the HEIC if you want the smallest file and the best quality. The decoder reads the common kind of HEIC photo and tells you when a file uses something else, such as 10-bit colour or lossless coding, rather than saving a broken picture.
Tips
- To make the JPGs smaller for email or a form, run them through Compress image or shrink them with Resize image.
- Need another format? Convert image handles PNG, JPEG and WebP, and Image to WebP makes small web images.
- The JPG carries no camera or location data. To clean other pictures the same way, use Remove EXIF.
Questions
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Your browser reads the HEIC file and writes the JPG on your device, using a decoder that is part of this page. Nothing is sent to a server, so private photos stay private.
Why does each photo take a few seconds?
HEIC pictures are compressed with HEVC, a video codec that most browsers can't open. This tool decodes them with a program written in JavaScript that runs in the background of the page. That is slower than a built-in decoder: expect a few seconds for a 12-megapixel photo, and longer on a phone.
Which HEIC files work?
The photos that iPhones and most Android phones save: ordinary 8-bit colour, including large photos stored as tiles and photos taken sideways. Not supported are 10-bit HEIC (some cameras make it), lossless HEIC, and monochrome, 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 files. If a file can't be read the tool says so, instead of saving a damaged picture.
What is the difference between HEIC and HEIF?
HEIF is the container format, and HEIC is HEIF holding pictures coded with HEVC, which is what phones use. This tool reads those: files ending in .heic or .heif that come from phones.
Will the colours look the same?
Almost always. Newer iPhones record photos in the wider Display P3 colour range, while a JPG from this tool is read as ordinary sRGB, so very saturated colours can look a little less vivid than on the phone.
Is camera and location data kept?
No. The JPG is written from the picture alone, so details such as the camera model, the date and the GPS position are not copied, and the picture is saved upright. That also makes the file safer to share.
Can I convert many photos at once?
Yes, up to 50 at a time. They are converted one after another, and you can download each JPG or one .zip with all of them.
