How to make a favicon
- Choose an image, or switch to Letters and type one or two characters with your colours.
- For an image, pick a centred square crop or fit with padding. Check the previews at 16, 32, 48 and 180 pixels.
- Press Create favicon files, download the .zip and paste the HTML into your pages.
What a favicon set contains
A favicon is the small icon in a browser tab, bookmark list or search result. Browsers look for a few different files: favicon.ico for older and general use, PNG icons at 16 and 32 pixels for tabs, a 180 pixel Apple touch icon for iPhone and iPad home screens, and 192 and 512 pixel icons for Android and installable web apps. A small site.webmanifest file lists the Android icons.
This tool draws each size separately from your original, so small sizes are scaled down from the full image rather than blown up from a tiny one. The .ico file is written as a container of three PNG images at 16, 32 and 48 pixels. Letter icons are drawn directly at each size, so edges stay sharp.
Tips
- Use bold, simple shapes and strong contrast. Fine detail disappears at 16 pixels.
- Want a square picture from part of a photo? Use Crop image with 1:1 first.
- Need other sizes? Resize image gives you any width and height.

Is my image uploaded?
No. The icons are drawn in your browser on your device, and the zip is built there too. Nothing is sent to a server.
What files do I get?
favicon.ico (16, 32 and 48 pixel versions), favicon-16x16.png, favicon-32x32.png, apple-touch-icon.png (180 pixels), android-chrome-192x192.png, android-chrome-512x512.png and site.webmanifest, in one .zip.
Where do I put the files?
In the root folder of your website, so they are served at addresses like /favicon.ico. Then paste the HTML snippet shown after you create the files into the head of your pages.
What image should I start with?
A square picture at least 512 × 512 pixels gives the cleanest result, because the largest icon is 512 pixels. Simple shapes survive shrinking to 16 pixels much better than detailed ones. Check the 16 and 32 pixel previews.
What is the difference between cropping and padding?
Cropping takes a centred square from the image and discards the rest. Fit with padding keeps the whole image, centres it with a small margin, and fills the space with your background colour or leaves it transparent.
Is the .ico file valid?
Yes. It contains three PNG-encoded images at 16, 32 and 48 pixels, which every current browser reads.
