Shopify return rule preview
Trace each synthetic item's supplied return rule and staff exception before reviewing the actual order in Shopify.
Runs entirely in your browser
Staff review only; never a refund guarantee. No uploads, store-data storage or Shopify access. Use synthetic facts. Page assets load normally; preview actions make no network requests. Shopify and staff decide actual eligibility, deadlines, fees, exceptions, taxes and refunds; applicable rights can override store policy.
Supplied rule trace
Preview limits: 250 KB per input, 100 items, 30 market policies and 30 overrides/exceptions per policy. Date-only review of a supplied snapshot, not a refund amount, legal opinion or eligibility guarantee.
How to preview return rules
- Load the synthetic example or enter the policy snapshot in force when the synthetic order was placed. No real order or customer data is needed.
- Enter delivery, fulfillment, request date, market and synthetic item facts. Select Preview return rules.
- Review each item's selected policy, window, final-sale match, fees and staff exceptions. Verify the actual order and applicable rights in Shopify before acting.
Settings input reference
Load the example for a complete editable schema. Settings contain effectiveFrom (snapshot start date), default (a full policy) and markets (array of {market, policy} full replacements). Exact case-sensitive synthetic keys are used throughout. Missing required fields or unknown fields stop the preview; nothing is silently inferred from Shopify.
Each policy requires id, windowDays (whole days or null for unlimited), start (item_delivery or last_delivery), transitDays (known whole-day buffer or null if unknown), extendNonBusiness (true/false), restockingPercent and returnShipping. Return shipping is {"kind":"free"}, {"kind":"customer_label"}, or {"kind":"flat","amount":5,"currency":"USD"}. Fees are settings only, never computed deductions.
Optional arrays: finalSaleProducts OR finalSaleCollections, finalSaleTags (staff convention only), windowOverrides and exceptions. A window override has id, days and selector arrays products, collections, tags. Matching product/collection windows use the shortest override; tag-only overrides trigger staff review, not a native window decision. Use a unique product/variant key when modeling a variant. Shopify does not allow bundles as final sale.
Staff exceptions have id, note, optional reason and optional selector arrays products, collections, tags. No selectors means all items; a reason must match exactly when supplied. Every matching exception is shown. These are local staff notes, not an automatic Shopify policy override; conflicting exceptions require staff review.
Synthetic order reference
Order fields: orderedOn, requestOn, market, channel (online/pos), posPro (yes/no/unknown), optional lastDeliveredOn, and an items array. Each item has unique id, product, collections and tags arrays, fulfilledOn and deliveredOn (dates or null), bundle (true/false), and optional reason. Dates are YYYY-MM-DD in one consistent store calendar. Load separate facts for each exchange or added-item group.
What this preview leaves to Shopify and staff
The current documentation allows a return window from an item's delivery or delivery of the last item in the order, with a transit buffer when delivery is unavailable. No buffer is guessed here. Weekend/holiday extension and exact deadline-day requests are marked for review, not decided without a native calendar and cutoff. Unfulfilled items belong to cancellation/refund review, not a return-window approval. Rule changes apply only to future orders.
Shopify POS return rules require POS Pro. Turning off self-serve does not turn off the rules for manual admin returns. The preview does not evaluate statutory withdrawal rights, cancellation rules, taxes on return shipping, bundles' component behavior, prior returns or refund calculations. Staff exceptions and tags remain review notes. Read the native order's original terms and the applicable law; a store final-sale setting does not erase statutory rights.
For a step-by-step staff checklist, read the Shopify return rule guide.

Questions
Do you upload or save my order data?
No. The inputs and results stay in browser memory. No processing requests, Shopify connection, uploads or store-data storage. Clear removes page working copies. Use synthetic items, never customer details.
Is this a refund guarantee?
No. Shopify and staff decide the actual return, cancellation, fees and refund. The preview does not calculate refund amounts or override legal rights. A within-window label is only a comparison with the supplied dates.
How are market policies and overrides selected?
An exact matching market policy replaces the default policy. Market-specific policies are early access and may not exist for your store. Matching product/collection window overrides replace the default window; the shortest matching window wins. Final sale takes precedence.
Are final-sale tags a native Shopify setting?
Not in the documentation read for this tool. Native final sale selects products or collections, not both, and does not support bundles. Tag matches are explicitly marked staff conventions, not native final-sale decisions.
Are fees deducted automatically?
Shopify says return fees are not automatically deducted from refunds. Staff review deductions manually. The flat return shipping fee is once per return, not per item; restocking and shipping fees can be edited per return.
What happens if the policy changed after the order?
Shopify changes apply only to future orders. If the order predates the supplied snapshot, the preview stops short of a window conclusion and asks for the original terms. It cannot retrieve historical settings.
