Weather forecast API without an API key

POST coordinates or a city name to /v1/weather and get an hourly forecast for up to 48 hours. There is no account or API key: the free tier needs one header, and beyond it you pay per call in USDC with x402.

Request

Give exactly one form: place ("City" or "City, CC") or lat with lon. hours is 1 to 48 (default 24). Place names match cities of 15,000 or more people.

curl, using the free tier
curl -s -X POST https://tanod.dev/v1/weather \
  -H 'X-Tanod-Free: 1' -H 'content-type: application/json' \
  -d '{"place":"Oslo, NO","hours":2}'

Limits and caveats

Attribution is required. Forecast data is from MET Norway (api.met.no) and place names from GeoNames (geonames.org), both licensed CC BY 4.0. Credit them when you show or republish the data; the response carries an attribution field you can reuse.

Forecasts can be wrong. They are numerical model output. Do not use them for safety-critical decisions such as aviation, marine or severe-weather warnings.

An unknown place is a 404 place_not_found; upstream errors are a 5xx. Neither is charged. To turn coordinates into a city, see the geocoding guide.

Price and free allowance

USD 0.002 per call, paid in USDC on Base with x402. 5 free forecasts per IP per UTC day with the header X-Tanod-Free: 1. MCP tool: get_weather at https://tanod.dev/mcp, where the free tier is automatic.
