Image processing APIs for agents: price per call
Snapshot 2026-10-09
An agent that resizes, converts, compresses or reads an image can call a paid API for each step, and on the x402 and PayAI marketplaces every endpoint has a listed price. We index both daily. After a hand check that drops the many unrelated "image" listings (image generation, image search, Docker images and web-page metadata among them), 35 genuine image-processing offers remain on 2026-10-09. The median listed offer costs USD 0.010 per call and the middle half of offers sit between USD 0.005 and 0.010. Tanod's /v1/image/* routes list at USD 0.002 for most operations and USD 0.003 for two.
Median listed x402 price for image processing: USD 0.010 per call across 35 offers on 12 hosts (snapshot 2026-10-09). Tanod: USD 0.002 for most operations and USD 0.003 for two.
The numbers
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Image-processing offers, last seen in the 3 days to 2026-10-09, not Tanod, after the hand check | 35 on 12 hosts |
| Lowest listed price | USD 0.001 |
| First quartile | USD 0.005 |
| Median | USD 0.010 |
| Third quartile | USD 0.010 |
| Highest listed price | USD 0.03 (a tiled or watermark operation) |
| Tanod at USD 0.002 | 2 offers list less, 2 list exactly this, 31 list more |
By operation
| Operation | Offers | Hosts | Median (USD) | Range (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Convert, compress or optimize | 11 | 8 | 0.010 | 0.004 to 0.020 |
| Resize or thumbnail | 9 | 5 | 0.010 | 0.001 to 0.020 |
| Read metadata or EXIF | 5 | 4 | 0.008 | 0.002 to 0.010 |
| Colors or palette | 4 | 4 | 0.0065 | 0.003 to 0.010 |
| Adjust, extend or watermark | 4 | 3 | 0.015 | 0.010 to 0.030 |
| Crop, rotate or flip | 2 | 2 | 0.006 | 0.002 to 0.010 |
Hosts are counted within each row, so the rows add up to more than 12. The groups are assigned from the endpoint path and listing text by rule, then checked by hand; an endpoint that does several operations is counted once, under its main job (so a "transform" endpoint that resizes and converts is counted under convert). The crop and colors groups hold two and four offers, so their medians say little.
Price histogram
| Listed price per call (USD) | Offers |
|---|---|
| under 0.002 | 2 |
| 0.002 to under 0.005 | 6 |
| 0.005 to under 0.01 | 6 |
| 0.01 to under 0.02 (13 are exactly 0.01) | 16 |
| 0.02 to under 0.05 | 5 |
| 0.05 or more | 0 |
Prices are per call as listed, in USD. Some listings are a minimum charge: one host lists its image routes at USD 0.01 while its listing text quotes USD 0.0003 per megapixel with the remainder credited, so its listed price overstates the effective price for small images.
Representative offers

Method
- Source: Tanod's agent index of the CDP x402 Bazaar and PayAI, snapshot 2026-10-09 (latest ok snapshots). Internal-only sources are not used. The MCP registry and Smithery carry no per-call price and are left out.
- Match: listing name, URL or description names an image and an image operation (resize, thumbnail, convert, compress, optimize, crop, rotate, metadata, EXIF, strip, dominant colour, palette, watermark, adjust, extend). Tanod's own listings (tanod.dev) are excluded, as are hosts the index flags as bulk or templated listing farms.
- Hand check (large for this category): the word "image" is overloaded, so an automatic keyword match is mostly false positives. We removed, by hand, listings that match but are not image processing: image generation and text-to-image editing (for example gpt-image, grok-imagine, nano-banana, "edit an image from a text instruction"), image search and reverse search, object detection, captioning and vision, Docker container images, web-page and URL metadata that mentions og:image, satellite and map imagery, raster-to-SVG vectorization, pixel-art import, app-icon and favicon generation, video overlay and GIF, and text tools whose description happened to contain an image word.
- Because of that overloading, the automatic daily file x402-category-prices.json does not carry an image category; a keyword rule cannot separate these reliably without the hand step, so this page is the reference figure for image processing. The daily file covers categories where a keyword rule is dependable (PDF, OCR, chain reads, and others).
- Deduplicated: the same host and path counts once, at its lowest listed price; a second path for the same operation on one host, with the same description and price, collapses to one offer.
- The manual step is a judgement call and another reader could draw the line differently; the quartiles move little but the counts would change. Quartiles use linear interpolation. Listed price is the first payment requirement; some endpoints charge by image size or megapixels, and listings can be stale or wrong.
Tanod's image routes
Every route below takes an image URL or an inline base64 image and is paid per call in USDC on Base or Polygon with x402. Prices are from Tanod's configuration on 2026-10-10.
| Operation | Route | Price per call (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Resize (fit, contain, cover or fill) | /v1/image/resize | 0.002 |
| Make 1 to 8 thumbnails in one call | /v1/image/thumbnail | 0.002 |
| Crop to a box or aspect ratio | /v1/image/crop | 0.002 |
| Rotate (any angle) or flip | /v1/image/rotate | 0.002 |
| Convert format (PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, TIFF, BMP, ICO, AVIF) | /v1/image/convert | 0.002 |
| Compress, optionally to a byte budget | /v1/image/compress | 0.003 |
| Read EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC and ICC metadata | /v1/image/metadata | 0.002 |
| Strip EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC and comments | /v1/image/strip-metadata | 0.002 |
| Add a text watermark (one mark or tiled) | /v1/image/watermark | 0.002 |
| Dominant colours (palette) | /v1/image/colors | 0.002 |
| Perceptual hashes, optionally compared | /v1/image/hash | 0.002 |
| BlurHash placeholder string | /v1/image/blurhash | 0.002 |
| Favicon set (ICO, PNGs, apple-touch-icon) from an image | /v1/image/favicon | 0.003 |
Eleven of the thirteen routes list at USD 0.002 and two at USD 0.003. The same operations are MCP tools at https://tanod.dev/mcp. Guides per operation: resize, thumbnail, crop, rotate, convert, compress, metadata, strip metadata, watermark, colours, perceptual hash, favicon, BlurHash.
Reading the comparison
- On price alone, Tanod's USD 0.002 sits below the first quartile: of the 35 offers, 2 list less, 2 list the same and 31 list more. Its two USD 0.003 routes are still below the median of USD 0.010.
- Cheaper offers exist for single operations, down to USD 0.001 for a resize or thumbnail. Listed price says nothing about image-size limits, output quality or uptime, which we have not compared.
- Ten of the 12 hosts list four offers or fewer. One host lists ten of the 35 offers.

USD 0.002 to 0.003 per call as in the table, paid in USDC on Base or Polygon with x402. An unpaid call returns a 402 with the payment requirements; there is no account and no key.
