OCR API prices for agents
Snapshot 2026-10-09
An agent can buy OCR by the call over x402: send an image or a scanned PDF, get text back. We index the x402 and PayAI marketplaces daily, so here is what OCR prices look like on 2026-10-09. The short version: we found 29 distinct priced OCR offers on 23 hosts, the median is USD 0.010 per call, and Tanod's image OCR (/v1/ocr) costs USD 0.01, the same as the median and as 16 of the 29 offers. 8 list less, 5 list more. Method
- Source: Tanod's agent index of the CDP x402 Bazaar and PayAI, queried 2026-10-09 (newest listing seen 2026-10-09T04:31:37Z). The MCP registry and Smithery carry no per-call price and are not used. Internal-only sources are not used.
- Match: listings with a price, last seen on or after the date three days before the query, whose lowercased name, URL or description contains "ocr" as a word. That found 69 distinct URLs, which were then reviewed by hand against the paths and descriptions.
- Excluded: listings where "OCR" is a false positive (New Zealand's Official Cash Rate, an order-form data platform), PDF text extraction that says it does no OCR, listings that only mention OCR in passing (invoice and receipt field extractors, document question answering, multi-purpose skill bundles, general image description), and Tanod's own routes. Of the 67 non-Tanod URLs, 38 were left out, so a looser rule would find more.
- Deduplicated: the same URL listed on both marketplaces counts once, at its lower listed price (one host lists different prices on the two). Listed price is the first payment requirement; some endpoints charge differently by input, and one host's text quotes a lower per-call price than its listing. Quartiles use linear interpolation.
Where Tanod fits
Tanod has two OCR routes, both Tesseract. /v1/ocr takes the URL of a public PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF or single-page TIFF (up to 10 MB and 40 megapixels) and returns text, words and a mean confidence; USD 0.01 per call, with free daily calls (below). /v1/pdf/ocr turns a scanned PDF into a searchable PDF (an invisible text layer over the original pages) and also returns the recognised text; USD 0.01 for up to 5 pages, USD 0.02 for 6 to 10 pages, with no free tier. Details are in the image OCR guide and the PDF OCR guide.
When a priced listing above is the better choice
- You need the lowest price: 8 offers list USD 0.003 to 0.009, though we have not tested them.
- You need to send the image itself. Tanod's
/v1/ocrreads a public URL, not an upload. - You want a vision model rather than Tesseract, which is what Tanod runs; the one vision-model listing in this set lists USD 0.054.
- You need longer scanned PDFs per call. Tanod takes at most 10 pages; one listing says 25.
When Tanod fits
- You want the market price, with a free start: 5 static renders per IP per UTC day, shared with Tanod's PDF text, page metadata and other sitepeek reads, with the header
X-Tanod-Free: 1. - You want a searchable PDF back, with the original pages unchanged underneath, not only text.
- You want failures not to be charged: a non-image, an oversize image, an encrypted PDF or a call that cannot finish in time is not billed.

/v1/ocr USD 0.01 per call, 5 free per IP per UTC day (a pool shared with other sitepeek reads). /v1/pdf/ocr USD 0.01 for up to 5 pages, USD 0.02 for 6 to 10 pages, no free tier. Paid in USDC on Base or Polygon with x402. MCP tools: ocr_image and pdf_ocr at https://tanod.dev/mcp, where the free allowance applies automatically to ocr_image.
