Document to Markdown APIs for agents: price per call

Retrieval pipelines and agents want Markdown, not binary office files. A document-to-Markdown endpoint takes a Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, EPUB or OpenDocument file and returns Markdown with headings, tables and lists kept, ready to drop into a model's context. On the x402 marketplace these conversions are sold per call, and we index the listings. After a hand check that drops web-page readers, raw PDF text extractors, OCR, word-frequency tools and format converters that do not output Markdown, 15 genuine document-to-Markdown offers remain on 2026-10-07, across 9 hosts. The median listed offer costs USD 0.005 per call and the middle half sit between USD 0.005 and USD 0.01. Tanod's /v1/docs/to-markdown lists at USD 0.005.

Of the eight single-type converters, four take PDF only; the others take DOCX, XLSX, PPTX or EPUB. The seven multi-format endpoints accept a mix of office, OpenDocument, PDF, EPUB, HTML and CSV in one call. Tanod's route is a multi-format one: it detects the format by content and converts DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, HTML, EPUB, PDF (text layer), CSV and plain text.

Prices are per call as listed, in USD. The crowd sits at USD 0.005 to USD 0.01. The two offers under USD 0.005 are PDF-only converters at USD 0.002 and USD 0.003. The USD 0.026 offer is a content-type-detecting wrapper, and the USD 0.05 top end adds an optional AI summary to the conversion.
Which document-to-Markdown listings agents actually pay
The Bazaar also reports, per listing, how many distinct wallets paid it and how many paid calls it served in the last 30 days. The 15 offers drew about 20 paying-wallet counts and 71 paid calls over the window. Tanod's route is not yet in this Bazaar demand feed.

Method
- Source: Tanod's agent index of the CDP x402 Bazaar, latest ok snapshot 2026-10-07. Internal-only sources are not used. The MCP registry and Smithery carry no per-call price and are left out.
- Category: an endpoint that takes a document — a Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, EPUB, OpenDocument, CSV, HTML or plain-text file, by URL or base64 — and returns Markdown. Multi-format converters and single-format converters both count; Tanod's own listings (tanod.dev) are excluded.
- Hand check: a keyword match on "markdown" alone pulls in hundreds of unrelated listings, so each candidate was read. Removed, by hand: web-page readers that fetch a URL's HTML and return article Markdown (a separate page); raw PDF-to-text extractors that return plain text, not Markdown (part of the PDF toolkit page); OCR of scanned pages (a separate page); word-frequency and summary tools that only take Markdown as input; a three-way document merge; a niche-checker whose example query is "pdf to markdown"; and a physical-mail service that accepts DOCX. Markdown-to-PDF and office-to-PDF converters go the other way and are not counted here.
- One seller's concentration disclosed: freeq.one lists six genuine per-format converters (DOCX, EPUB, PPTX, XLSX, PDF and an auto-detect endpoint), six of the 15 offers. They are distinct endpoints, not a templated catalog, so each is counted; the median is USD 0.005 with or without them.
- Deduplicated: the same host and path counts once, at its lowest listed price.
- The manual step is a judgement call and another reader could draw the line differently, especially between a document converter and a web-page reader that also accepts a PDF; the quartiles move little but the counts would change. Quartiles use linear interpolation. Listed price is the first payment requirement; listings can be stale or wrong. Because the hand step is needed here, this page is the reference figure and this category is not in the automatic daily file x402-category-prices.json.
Tanod's document routes
Each route is paid per call in USDC on Base or Polygon with x402. There is no account and no key; an unpaid call returns a 402 with the payment requirements. Prices are from Tanod's configuration on 2026-10-10.

Reading the comparison
- On price, Tanod at USD 0.005 is at the median: of the 15 offers, 2 list less, 7 list the same and 6 list more.
- Tanod converts many formats in one route — DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, HTML, EPUB, PDF (text layer), CSV and plain text, detected by content — where eight of the 15 offers take only one format. Among the multi-format offers, clawfetch, aayatai, resolve402, relaystation and freeq.one's auto endpoint are the direct comparison.
- The two cheaper offers at USD 0.002 and USD 0.003 convert PDF only. For a PDF this is a real alternative; for a Word or Excel file it is not.
- Tanod converts the PDF text layer, not scanned images; a scanned PDF needs the OCR route first. Several offers here share that limit.
- Conversion is sandboxed: a child process with CPU, memory and time limits, zip-bomb and XML-entity guards, and no network access, and the result is marked untrusted content. Listed price says nothing about whether a converter is hardened against hostile files.
