Reverse text
Flip text backwards letter by letter, or reverse the order of words or lines.
Runs entirely in your browser
Type text to begin.
Text up to about 5 MB. The result updates as you type.
How to reverse text
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Choose what to reverse: all the letters, the order of words, the spelling of each word, or the order of lines.
- Copy the reversed text or download it as a .txt file.
Reversing text without breaking characters
Backwards text is used for puzzles, games, secret notes, checking palindromes and testing how software copes with unusual input. Reversing looks trivial, but computers store many characters as more than one piece: most emoji, flags, and letters whose accent is stored separately. Flipping the pieces one by one produces broken symbols. This tool uses your browser's text segmentation to find where each visible character starts and ends, and reverses whole characters.
The Word order and Each word options work line by line, so a list keeps its line structure. Spaces between words are kept as they were.
Right-to-left scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew are stored in reading order and displayed right to left by your browser, so reversing them gives text that reads backwards, the same as for English.
Tips
- Make a secret note harder to read with the Morse code translator or Text to binary.
- Reverse a sorted list with Sort lines alphabetically, which can sort Z to A directly.
- Swap capitals and lower case with the Case converter.
Questions
Do emoji and accented letters survive?
Yes. The text is split into characters as you see them before it is reversed, so an emoji made of several parts (such as a family or a flag) and a letter with a separately stored accent stay whole. Simple code that reverses text one storage unit at a time breaks them into garbage or moves accents onto the wrong letter.
What is the difference between the four options?
Letters reverses the whole text, so "Hello world" becomes "dlrow olleH". Word order keeps each word as it is but reverses their order on each line: "world Hello". Each word spells every word backwards but keeps them in place: "olleH dlrow". Line order puts the last line first and leaves each line unchanged.
What happens to punctuation in Word order mode?
Punctuation stays attached to the word it touches, because words are split at spaces. "Hello, world!" becomes "world! Hello,".
Can I use this to check for a palindrome?
Yes. Reverse the letters and compare. The report says when the text reads the same both ways, ignoring case, spaces and punctuation, so "A man, a plan, a canal: Panama" counts as a palindrome.
Is this the same as mirror or upside-down text?
No. Reversing changes the order of the characters but not the characters themselves. Mirror and upside-down text replace each letter with a look-alike symbol, which is a different effect.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The text is reversed in your browser, and it is not uploaded or stored.
