How to convert Markdown to HTML

  1. Type or paste your Markdown, or open a .md file.
  2. Read the HTML on the right, or switch to Preview to see it rendered. Turn on the full document option if you need a complete page.
  3. Copy the HTML or download it as an .html file.

How Markdown becomes HTML

Markdown is a way of writing formatted text with plain characters: a # starts a heading, **two asterisks** make bold, a line starting with a dash is a list item. It is what README files, many note apps and most developer forums use. Browsers, email templates and content systems want HTML, so at some point the Markdown has to be translated.

This converter follows CommonMark with the GitHub Flavored Markdown additions, so tables, task lists and strikethrough work the way they do on GitHub. The HTML it produces is then passed through a sanitiser, which removes anything that could run code when the HTML is shown, while leaving ordinary formatting alone.

The preview tab shows the same HTML rendered in the page. Links open in a new tab, and images hosted elsewhere are shown as placeholders rather than fetched, so nothing you write is sent to another site while you work.

Tips

Questions

Is my text uploaded?

No. The Markdown is converted in your browser with the open-source marked library, and nothing is sent anywhere or stored.

Which Markdown syntax is supported?

CommonMark plus the GitHub additions: tables, task lists (- [x] done), strikethrough with ~~, fenced code blocks and automatic links. Single line breaks are joined into one paragraph as in standard Markdown; turn on Line breaks become <br> to keep them, as GitHub comments do.

Is the HTML safe to put on a website?

It is cleaned with the open-source DOMPurify library before you see it. Scripts, event handlers such as onerror, javascript: links, iframes and embedded objects are removed, and the line under the result lists what was taken out. Ordinary HTML written inside the Markdown, such as <details> or , is kept. As with any content from someone else, keep your own site's protections in place.

Why does an image show as a placeholder in the preview?

The preview never loads anything from another website, so your text isn't revealed to that site and the page stays private. Images from web addresses appear as a labelled placeholder with their address. The HTML code still contains the normal <img> tag, so the image will show wherever you publish it.

What does the full document option add?

A complete page around the HTML: a doctype, a <head> with UTF-8 charset, a mobile viewport tag and a title taken from the first heading. Leave it off when you are pasting into an existing page or a CMS.

Do headings get id attributes for links?

No. Headings are output as plain <h1> to <h6> tags. If you need anchors, add the ids in your site's template or by hand.
