Dates from year 1 to 9999 in the Gregorian calendar. Business days count Monday to Friday only; public holidays are not known to this tool.
How to count the days between two dates
- Enter the start and end dates. Add times as well if you need hours and minutes.
- Tick Include the end date if both the first and last day should count, as for a holiday or a hire period.
- Read the result in years, months and days, total days, weeks and business days. To find a date instead, use the Add or subtract part of the tool.
How the difference is counted
Total days is simply how many calendar days lie between the two dates. To split that into years, months and days, the calculator counts whole months forward from the start date for as long as it doesn't pass the end date, then counts the days left. A month that is too short for the start day ends on its last day, so 31 January plus one month is the end of February.
Business days are the Mondays to Fridays among the counted days. With Include the end date off, the range runs from the start date up to, but not including, the end date; switching it on adds the end date to both the total and the business day count.
Everything is worked out on the calendar rather than with clock time, so the result is the same whatever time zone your device is in and whether or not the range crosses a daylight saving change.
Tips
- For someone's exact age and their next birthday, use the age calculator.
- Comparing two figures rather than two dates? The percentage calculator works out the change.
Questions
Does it count the start date and the end date?
By default it counts the days from the start date up to the end date, the way you count nights in a hotel: 1 February to 1 March 2024 is 29 days. Tick Include the end date to count both ends, which gives 30 days for the same dates. That is the right choice for things like leave that runs from one date to another inclusive.
How are business days counted?
Business days are Monday to Friday among the days being counted, using the same start and end rule as the total. Public holidays differ by country and region and are not included, so subtract any that fall in the range yourself.
What happens when I add a month to 31 January?
The result is the last day of February: 29 February in a leap year such as 2024 and 28 February otherwise. When the day doesn't exist in the target month, the calculator uses that month's last day. Adding a year to 29 February works the same way and gives 28 February.
Do daylight saving changes affect the result?
Not for dates. Days are counted on the calendar, so a range that crosses a clock change still counts whole days. When you add times, they are treated as clock times: the hour skipped or repeated at a daylight saving change is not added or removed.
What if the end date is before the start date?
The calculator still works: it shows the length of the gap and says that the end date comes first. Swap the dates if you meant it the other way round.
