Translation API prices for agents
Snapshot 2026-10-07
An agent working across languages — localizing a string, parsing a foreign-language source, answering a user in their own tongue — needs to turn text in one language into text in another. On the x402 marketplace that translation is sold per call, and we index the listings. This page counts only endpoints whose job is that one operation: take a piece of text and a target language, and return the translated text. It leaves out the neighbours that cluster around the same keyword — language detectors that name the language but do not translate it, general-purpose LLM and chat gateways that happen to translate if you ask them to, 4-byte-selector “translators” that decode a function signature, cron-expression describers, speech and subtitle transcribers with a translate-to-English mode, news and review feeds that ship a machine-translated title, scripture editions, governance-proposal summarizers, and code or circuit transpilers. After that hand check, 30 genuine text-translation offers remain on 2026-10-07, across 30 distinct hosts. They list from USD 0.002 at the floor to USD 0.30 at the top, a USD 0.01 median. Tanod's route lists at USD 0.003.
Median listed x402 price to translate text into a target language: USD 0.01 per call across 30 offers (snapshot 2026-10-07), from USD 0.002 at the floor to USD 0.30 at the top, with the middle half between about USD 0.005 and USD 0.01. Tanod's route (/v1/text/translate) lists at USD 0.003, below the lower quartile: three offers are cheaper, one matches it, and twenty-six cost more. Tanod is the cheap, private, offline option; several dearer offers run a frontier LLM or DeepL and translate better.
The numbers
| Offers (not Tanod) | Floor | 25th pct | Median | 75th pct | Top | Tanod |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | USD 0.002 | USD 0.005 | USD 0.01 | USD 0.01 | USD 0.30 | USD 0.003 |
Thirty offers across thirty distinct hosts. Tanod's USD 0.003 sits below the 25th percentile and well below the USD 0.01 median. Three competitors are cheaper (all at USD 0.002); one matches Tanod at USD 0.003; twenty-six list higher, from about USD 0.005 up to USD 0.30. Because the market is a spread of small sellers, each host counts once, so no dedup inflates the count.
Price histogram
| Listed price per call (USD) | Offers |
|---|---|
| 0.002 | 3 |
| 0.003 – 0.005 | 5 |
| 0.006 – 0.010 | 15 |
| 0.011 – 0.020 | 2 |
| 0.021 – 0.050 | 3 |
| over 0.050 | 2 |
Prices are per call as listed, in USD; the six rows sum to 30. The crowd bunches at USD 0.01 and below — twenty-three of the thirty list at a cent or less — with a thin tail at USD 0.02 to USD 0.05 and two outliers at USD 0.054 and USD 0.30. A short translation is light work for the host, whether it runs a small neural model or a cheap LLM call, so the cheap end is crowded; the dearer listings are paying for a better engine, a length premium, or a professional-service wrapper.
Which listings agents actually pay
The Bazaar also reports, per listing, how many distinct wallets paid it and how many paid calls it served in the last 30 days. Across the 30 offers that is 59 paying-wallet counts and 195 paid calls over the window — a modest niche, and a concentrated one: the three busiest listings carry about three-fifths of the calls. Tanod's route is not yet in this Bazaar demand feed.

Method
- Source: Tanod's agent index of the CDP x402 Bazaar, latest ok snapshot 2026-10-07. Internal-only sources are not used. The MCP registry and Smithery carry no per-call price and are left out.
- Category: an endpoint whose job is to take a piece of text and a target language and return the translated text. Tanod's own listing (tanod.dev) is excluded.
- Hand check: a keyword match on “translate” pulls in a wide spread of tools, so each candidate was read, and the neighbours were removed by hand. Language detectors that name the language without translating it were left out (they are the subject of a separate page). So were general-purpose LLM and chat gateways — Anthropic Messages passthroughs, OpenAI-compatible shims, “cheap errand” text handlers — that translate only as one thing among many; 4-byte function-selector decoders whose blurb says it “translates” a signature; cron-expression-to-English describers; leetspeak converters; speech and subtitle transcribers with a translate-to-English mode (a speech job, not a text one); news and review feeds that ship a machine-translated title; full-report and scripture-edition products that translate their own content rather than yours; governance-proposal summarizers; batch data-enrichment; and code and quantum-circuit transpilers.
- Deduplicated: the same host counts once, at the price of its best-matching endpoint. Hosts that list several translation routes (short and long, to-any and to-English, subtitle variants) are counted once; two domains serving the same relabeled product were merged. One host's translation endpoint uses a non-“translate” path and was kept because its description states plainly that it translates text.
- The manual step is a judgement call and another reader could draw the line differently, especially between a dedicated translator and a general LLM that will also translate. The median moves little either way, but the count would change. Listed price is the first payment requirement the gate charges; one length-priced listing is counted at its base rate. Listings can be stale or wrong. Because the hand step is needed here, this page is the reference figure and this category is not in the automatic daily file x402-category-prices.json.
Tanod's translation route
One endpoint translates text, paid per call in USDC on Base, Polygon or Solana with x402. There is no account and no key; an unpaid call returns a 402 with the payment requirements. Prices and behaviour are from Tanod's configuration on 2026-10-11.
| What it does | Route | Price per call (USD) |
|---|---|---|
Translate text between English and 14 languages (Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian and Tagalog) with offline neural machine translation (Argos Translate, OpenNMT models run with CTranslate2 on Tanod's own CPU, no third-party API). Give the target ISO 639-1 code and, optionally, the source; when the source is omitted it is detected. Any pair among the fourteen that is not English pivots through English. Up to 5,000 characters; the text is returned translated, with the source language, a detected flag and the character count. Quality is below large commercial engines: good for gist, search and triage, worth a review before publishing. | /v1/text/translate | 0.003 |
This is an MCP tool too: translate_text at https://tanod.dev/mcp, where the free tier is automatic. There are 5 free machine-learning calls per IP per UTC day with the header X-Tanod-Free: 1; the pool is shared with the other mlpeek routes (embeddings, rerank, similarity, entities, zero-shot classification and text to speech).
Reading the comparison
- On price, Tanod's USD 0.003 sits below the lower quartile and below the USD 0.01 median. Three offers are cheaper (all at USD 0.002, each tuned for a niche — DeFi content, skilled trades, bulk segments), and one matches Tanod at USD 0.003, so Tanod is not uniquely cheapest; it undercuts the median and the twenty-six dearer offers, which run up to USD 0.30.
- On quality, Tanod runs a small offline neural model, not a frontier LLM. Several dearer peers are explicit about using Claude Haiku, DeepL or an “LLM-quality” engine, and they will handle idioms, proper names and long sentences better than Argos does. If the output is going to be published or shown to a customer, one of those is the safer buy. Tanod is built for gist, search, routing and triage at a low flat price.
- The real differentiator is that Tanod translates offline on its own CPU, with no third-party API in the path, so the text is never forwarded to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or DeepL. For an agent handling private or regulated text, that matters more than a few tenths of a cent.
- On coverage, Tanod does English and fourteen languages; pairs that are not English pivot through English, which adds a second hop and some drift. Peers advertising “100+ languages” cover more pairs; if you need a language outside the fourteen, use one of them.
- The argument for Tanod is a private, offline translation that sits in one no-account toolkit, on one USDC balance shared with sixty-odd other chain, document, image and web routes, with a real free tier for low volume, under the median price. For publication-grade output in a wide set of languages, a frontier-LLM or DeepL peer is the better choice and costs a little more.
