Shopify discount combinations: what to test

Updated

Use when two discounts work alone but not together, or an online promotion behaves differently at a retail location. Start with synthetic carts and native Shopify settings, not a predicted payable amount.

Build a local test list

The free Shopify discount combination preview accepts a supplied rule array or its documented CSV schema and synthetic cart JSON. It makes no processing requests, uploads nothing and does not save store data. Load the synthetic example, edit the rules, then test the output in fresh checkout and POS carts.

Both discounts must allow the combination

A product discount allowing order discounts does not make the reverse setting true. Check both discounts' combination classes. Shopify documents product and order discounts with free shipping, and product discounts on separate items. Product plus order and order plus order require an eligible store without checkout.liquid customizations or Licensify. Plan alone does not establish eligibility. [1]

Check shipping and product-line conflicts

Two shipping discounts cannot combine on one order. Multiple product discounts on the same line require Shopify Plus, product combination settings and reciprocal same-product discount tags. A product tag and a discount tag are different facts. Buy X get Y and app/multi-class rules need their own native review; the preview flags them rather than inventing an allocation. [1]

Count the codes together

Shopify documents up to five product/order discount codes combined and one shipping code per order. It also documents up to 25 active automatic discounts, including app discounts, and up to 25 automatic discounts on one order. Counts in the preview describe only the rules you supplied, not the live store. [1]

Repeat the cart around each boundary

  1. Try each discount alone, then each intended pair and the full set.
  2. Use matching and separate product lines. Repeat below, at and above each native minimum. Shopify's minimum-amount rules can depend on product scope, purchase type and post-product-discount totals; the raw cart subtotal is not enough. [2]
  3. Test start and end boundaries in the Shopify admin time zone. Use explicit offsets in the preview; check daylight-saving changes separately. [2]
  4. Repeat online and at the actual POS location. Admin-created automatic discounts need an eligible POS Pro location and settings. External checkouts do not support these combinations, and manually applied custom discounts can bypass combination settings. [1, 2]

What only Shopify can decide

The preview never calculates a final payable amount. Shopify chooses actual eligibility, best combinations, product allocation, minimums, taxes, shipping and payment totals. Customer eligibility, subscriptions, usage limits, market settings and special discount behavior need native verification. A candidate cart case is a test instruction, not a promise.
