QR code and barcode API prices for agents
Snapshot 2026-10-09
A QR code or barcode image is a pure function of its text, and agents that print tickets, labels or links can buy one per call over x402. We index the x402 and PayAI marketplaces daily, so here is what generation prices look like on 2026-10-09. The short version: we found 42 distinct priced QR generators on 38 hosts, the median is USD 0.0026 per call, and Tanod's /v1/qr and /v1/barcode cost USD 0.001 each, the lowest listed price: no offer lists less, 11 list exactly that, 31 list more.
Tanod generates codes. It does not decode them. There is no route that reads a QR code or barcode from an image. If you need that, the index has 5 priced decoders (they are not counted below), and Tanod's OCR reads text, not codes.

Prices are per call as listed, in USD, not a measure of image quality or options. Most generators are cheap utilities, so the spread is small in absolute terms: 1,000 codes cost USD 1.00 at the lowest price and USD 10.00 at the highest.

The numbers: barcode generation
Barcode generation is a much thinner market: 6 priced generators on 6 hosts (one of them, x402.freeq.one, is the same route counted above as a QR and barcode generator). The median is USD 0.0035, from USD 0.002 to USD 0.010; Tanod's USD 0.001 is below all of them. With six offers these figures say little, and the listings below are all of them.
| Host and path | Listed price (USD) | What the listing says |
|---|---|---|
x402.freeq.one/tools/qr_generator | 0.002 | QR code or barcode as SVG or PNG |
agentsvc.io/api/v1/proxy/barcode | 0.0025 | PNG: code128, ean13, ean8, upca, upce, code39, itf14, gs1_128, isbn |
api.vextorium.com/v1/barcode-generate | 0.003 | SVG: EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, ISBN, ISSN, Code 128, Code 39, ITF, GS1-128 |
qr.openverbs.com/v1/barcode | 0.004 | SVG or PNG data URL: Code128, Code39, EAN-13/8, UPC-A/E, ITF-14, DataMatrix, PDF417 |
x402.aurelianflo.com/api/do/barcode/generate | 0.005 | barcode generation (listing gives no description) |
archtools.dev/v1/tools/barcode-generate | 0.010 | SVG: Code128, EAN-13, UPC-A and Code39 |
Many more listings mention barcodes but do something else: product lookups by EAN or UPC, check-digit validators, GS1 converters and decoders. Those are not counted.
Data file: x402-category-prices.json (daily figures for every category from automatic keyword matching, without the hand check behind this page, so its counts and medians differ from the ones above; CC BY 4.0).
Method
- Source: Tanod's agent index of the CDP x402 Bazaar and PayAI, queried 2026-10-09 (newest listing seen 2026-10-09T04:31:37Z). The MCP registry and Smithery carry no per-call price and are not used. Internal-only sources are not used.
- Match for QR: listings with a price, last seen on or after the date three days before the query, whose lowercased name, URL or description contains "qr" as a word (or qrcode, qr-code, qr_code), reviewed by hand for a generate, create, encode or PNG/SVG-output signal; that text rule found 75 distinct URLs. For barcodes: "barcode", "bar code", EAN-13, Code 128 or UPC-A, 48 distinct URLs, reviewed by hand.
- Excluded: QR decoders and readers, payload-specific generators (Pix and SEPA payment codes, otpauth URIs), eSIM and quote products that merely return a QR, lookups and validators, a generic multi-tool MCP server, matches on unrelated text (base58 strings), and Tanod's own routes.
- Deduplicated: the same URL on both marketplaces counts once at its lower listed price (two hosts list different prices on the two); the same host serving one description under a localised alias counts once. Listed price is the first payment requirement; one host's text quotes a lower per-call price than its listing. Quartiles use linear interpolation. The count depends on the match rules above; a looser rule finds more.
Where Tanod fits
Tanod has two generation routes, each USD 0.001 per call. /v1/qr returns a QR code as SVG text or a base64 PNG for up to 2,000 characters (2,953 UTF-8 bytes), with optional scale, error-correction level (L, M, Q, H) and border. /v1/barcode returns a 1-D barcode (Code 128, Code 39, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A or ISBN-13) as SVG or PNG; a wrong supplied check digit is rejected with 422 invalid_checksum and not charged, rather than encoding a different number. Neither route reads a code from an image. Details are in the QR code API guide and the barcode generator guide.
When a priced listing above is the better choice
- You need to decode codes from images; Tanod only generates.
- You need styled QR codes (logos, module shapes, colours) or batch generation in one call; Tanod's QR has only scale, error level and border options.
- You need other symbologies such as Data Matrix, PDF417, ITF-14 or GS1-128; Tanod's six types are listed above.
When Tanod fits
- You want generation at the bottom of the listed range: 1,000 QR codes cost USD 1.00 at the Tanod price, against USD 2.60 at the median listed offer.
- You want to try it first: 10 free utilpeek calls per IP per UTC day (one pool for QR, barcode and Tanod's other utility routes) with the header
X-Tanod-Free: 1. - You want a clear failure: data that does not fit at the chosen error level is a 422 and is not charged.

-H 'content-type: application/json' -H 'X-Tanod-Free: 1' \
-d '{"data": "https://example.com", "format": "svg"}'Price and free allowance
USD 0.001 per call on /v1/qr and on /v1/barcode, paid in USDC on Base or Polygon with x402. Free: 10 utilpeek calls per IP per UTC day, shared across utilpeek routes. MCP tools: make_qr_code and make_barcode at https://tanod.dev/mcp, where the free allowance applies automatically.
