What an x402 client should check before it signs: payee, amount, budget, network

Updated 2026-11-03

An x402 402 names whom to pay (payTo), how much, on which network and in which asset. A client that signs whatever the 402 says pays whoever answers: a wrong base URL, a hijacked domain or a proxy can swap the payee and keep the price small. Check four things before signing.

Our own TypeScript SDK 0.2.0 failed this: a reader pointed it at a local server that quoted a swapped payee, and it signed three USD 0.50 payments. Versions 0.3.0 (npm) and 0.4.0 (PyPI) refuse it, and the test below reproduces the case.

1. The four checks

Before every signature
check     refuse when                                   stops
payee payTo is not on your list for that network a swapped or hijacked endpoint
amount one payment is above your cap a price jump
budget the total signed would pass your cap loops and many small charges
network network or asset is not one you expect payment on a chain you don't watch

2. With the Tanod SDKs

@tanod-labs/sdk 0.3.0 and tanod 0.4.0 make all four checks by default: payees are Tanod's published payTo addresses, each payment is capped at USD 1, the client total at USD 5, and only USDC on Base is signed. Nothing is signed when a check fails. Set your own caps:

TypeScript
import { Tanod, PayeeMismatchError } from "@tanod-labs/sdk";

const tanod = new Tanod({
  maxPriceUsd: 0.05, // amount: no single payment above USD 0.05
  maxSpendUsd: 2, // budget: USD 2 in total for this client
}); // payee + network: Tanod's payTo, USDC on Base

try {
  await tanod.checkAddress("0x4200000000000000000000000000000000000006");
} catch (e) {
  if (e instanceof PayeeMismatchError) console.log("refused", e.payTo, e.network);
  else throw e;
}
Python
from tanod import Tanod, PayeeMismatchError

tanod = Tanod(
    max_price_usd=0.05, # amount: no single payment above USD 0.05
    max_spend_usd=2, # budget: USD 2 in total for this client
) # payee + network: Tanod's payTo, USDC on Base

try:
    tanod.check_address("0x4200000000000000000000000000000000000006")
except PayeeMismatchError as e:
    print("refused", e.pay_to, e.network)

Point the client at another deployment only with that deployment's payees (payees).

3. With a raw x402Client

@x402/fetch caps each payment (USD 1 by default) and signs only on networks you register. It has no payee check and no total budget, so add both:

TypeScript, @x402/fetch 2.28
import { x402Client, wrapFetchWithPayment } from "@x402/fetch";
import { ExactEvmScheme } from "@x402/evm";
import { privateKeyToAccount } from "viem/accounts";

const PAYEES = { "eip155:8453": "0x593857A4a4F619543ea12394137C3004ce841720" };
const BUDGET = 2_000_000n; // USD 2 in USDC base units (6 decimals)
let spent = 0n;

const client = new x402Client()
  .register("eip155:8453", new ExactEvmScheme(privateKeyToAccount(process.env.PRIVATE_KEY))) // network
  .setSpendControls({ maxAmountPerPayment: "$0.05" })                                         // amount
  .registerPolicy((version, reqs) =>                                                          // payee
    reqs.filter((r) => PAYEES[r.network]?.toLowerCase() === r.payTo.toLowerCase()))
  .onBeforePaymentCreation(async ({ selectedRequirements: r }) => {                           // budget
    if (spent + BigInt(r.amount) > BUDGET) return { abort: true, reason: "budget" };
    spent += BigInt(r.amount);
  });
const pay = wrapFetchWithPayment(fetch, client);

When the policy filters out every option, the call throws and nothing is signed.

4. What the test shows

Same local server for all three clients
case (local server, throwaway key) TS SDK Python SDK raw x402Client
payTo swapped to 0x9999...9999 refused refused refused
payTo is the expected payee signed signed signed
price above the per-payment cap refused refused refused
total would pass the budget refused refused refused

Refused means the server received no payment signature.

5. Before the first payment to a new seller

Pinning needs a payee you trust. For a seller you have not paid before, our x402 endpoint preflight (USD 0.001 per call) reads its live 402 and our agent index and answers pay, caution or avoid; a payTo that changed counts against it.

Questions

Does x402 itself stop a swapped payee?

No. The client signs whatever payTo, amount and network the 402 names. A signature cannot be pulled back once a facilitator settles it, so the checks have to run before signing.

Where do I get the payee to pin?

From the seller's own published payee list, the 402 you saw on first use, or a trusted index. Then refuse any change until you have checked it.
