State of the MCP Registry

Counts of servers in the official MCP Registry by delivery type, transport, package ecosystem, publish month and namespace, computed from Tanod's daily index. Numbers are regenerated from the index; the method is at the end.

Key figures

Remote or package

DeliveryServersShare
Remote endpoint only24,37558.6%
Package only14,69935.3%
Both remote and package2,0444.9%
Neither4881.2%

How servers are delivered. A remote endpoint is a hosted URL a client connects to; a package is something you install and run locally, such as an npm or PyPI package. A server can list both.

Remote transports

Remote transportServersShare of servers with a remote
streamable-http25,68197.2%
sse1,0804.1%

The transport declared by each remote endpoint. A server that lists several remotes of different types is counted once per type, so rows can add to more than the number of servers with a remote. The registry data we index does not carry header requirements for remote endpoints, so this page does not report how many remotes require authentication.

Package registries

pypi4,30210.3%
oci1,0742.6%
nuget1410.3%
mcpb1,0732.6%
other710.2%

Servers by package ecosystem, counted once per server per ecosystem. A server that publishes to several ecosystems appears in each row, so shares add to more than the share of servers with a package. "other" is any registry type not named in the table.

Servers by the month of their publish date, last 12 months to 2026-10; the final month is partial. The busiest month shown is 2026-09 with 13,676. The date is the publish date of the version in the registry record, so a server whose latest version was published recently can appear in a later month than its first release.

The part of the server name before the slash, usually a reverse-DNS name or a GitHub owner (io.github.<user>). The 15 largest namespaces hold 8,322 servers, 20.0% of the total.

Do the remote endpoints answer?

Checked 2026-10-10, 25,709 distinct streamable-http remote URLs (templated URLs skipped).

Method: one MCP initialize request per URL, 8 second timeout, no credentials sent, at most 4 KB of the reply read, redirects not followed. Private and loopback addresses are never contacted, and no more than two requests are in flight per host. "Answered" means the reply contained a JSON-RPC result. "Up, needs credentials" means the server responded with 401 or 403, so it is running but wants authentication that this check does not send. The check is repeated weekly. Only totals are published here.

Earlier work: an independent census of 10,542 unique endpoints in August 2026, discussed in registry issue #1487, found about 12% that did not speak MCP at the advertised URL. It used three probes per endpoint and a finer split of failures, so its categories do not map one to one onto these.

Method

Tanod indexes the official MCP Registry daily and stores one record per server. This page reads 41,606 indexed records and keeps one row per server name, preferring the latest published version; 0 duplicate rows were dropped, because the index already holds a single current record per server. A server counts as having a remote if its record lists at least one remote endpoint, and as having a package if it lists at least one package. Package types are taken from each package's registry type. The snapshot date is the most recent day the index saw the registry. Figures count registry entries, not servers confirmed to be online or working; the endpoint check above samples reachability separately. Tanod's own servers are listed under dev.tanod/* ; see tanod.dev/mcp-servers.
