Plagiarism check API: find web pages that contain a text's sentences

Updated 2026-10-16

Find where a text already appears

Did this article, essay or product description come from somewhere else? POST https://tanod.dev/v1/text/source-check picks the most distinctive sentences of a text, searches each on the web as an exact phrase, and returns the pages that contain it word for word. It is for agents that publish or review text and want to see copied content first.
curl -s -X POST https://tanod.dev/v1/text/source-check \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" -H "X-Tanod-Free: 1" \
-d '{"text": "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity. Our quarterly newsletter covers new trail maps, volunteer days and the reopening of the north ridge path in May.", "max_sentences": 2}'

Optional: max_sentences (1 to 10, default 10; the price is the same) and exclude_domains (up to 10 domains whose pages do not count, such as your own site). The text can be up to 100,000 characters.

Limits

This is a sample, not a full scan. Only the picked sentences are searched, in one independent web index (Mojeek) that does not hold every page. A sentence that is not found is no proof that it is original. A match can be a page that quotes the text or copied it. The route gives no verdict on who or what wrote the text; it does not detect AI writing. Each picked sentence (or its most distinctive 24-word window) goes to the search index as a quoted query. Nothing else of the text leaves Tanod, and it is not logged or stored. A text without a sentence of 8 or more words of prose is a 422 before payment. A failed or timed-out search is a 503 or 504, not charged. No match is a normal answer and is charged. Typical time is 3 to 15 s.

Price and free allowance

Each call costs USD 0.08 in USDC through x402, whatever the number of sentences. There is no free tier: each call runs up to 10 exact-phrase web searches. The live 402 says: "no free source checks (each call runs up to 10 exact-phrase web searches) per IP per UTC day".

It is also the MCP tool check_text_sources. In claude.ai or Claude Desktop, add https://tanod.dev/mcp/text?via=plagiarism-check-api as a custom connector (steps), then ask, for example, "Do any sentences of this draft appear word for word on the web?"
