EVM chain read APIs for agents, price per call
Snapshot 2026-10-09
Reading chain state is the topic AI agents pay for most over x402: in our 30-day Bazaar demand data, chain reads (balances, blocks, logs, ENS, calls) cover 4,205 endpoints, 19,704 summed unique payers (about 22 percent of all payers) and 148,727 paid calls, and the most-paid single endpoints are USD 0.001 to 0.005 reads such as an ERC-20 balance or a block number. Each listing on the x402 and PayAI marketplaces carries a price, so here is what EVM read prices look like on 2026-10-09. The short version: we found 459 distinct priced read offers on 136 hosts, the median is USD 0.003 per call, and Tanod's Ethereum and Base read routes cost USD 0.001 to 0.003. 97 offers list less than USD 0.002, 70 list exactly that, and 292 list more.

Prices are per call as listed, in USD, not a measure of what any call returns. 88 hosts have one or two offers each; the three largest catalogues hold 76 of the 459 offers, so group medians are driven partly by a few hosts. Many hosts list the same operation per chain; those count once.
By operation
Each offer is placed in the one group that fits its main operation. Medians and lowest prices are USD per call. The last two columns compare with the Tanod route for that group; where Tanod has two routes the first price is used.
| Operation | Offers | Hosts | Median | Lowest | Tanod price | Listed offers vs Tanod |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native balance | 9 | 9 | 0.005 | 0.001 | USD 0.002 | 2 less, 1 equal, 6 more |
| ERC-20 balance | 20 | 20 | 0.003 | 0.001 | USD 0.002 | 2 less, 4 equal, 14 more |
| Native plus tokens in one call | 41 | 32 | 0.004 | 0.001 | none in one call | n/a |
| Block and chain info | 73 | 49 | 0.002 | 0.001 | USD 0.001 | 0 less, 29 equal, 44 more |
| Transaction and receipt | 53 | 37 | 0.003 | 0.001 | USD 0.002 | 5 less, 10 equal, 38 more |
| Nonce | 15 | 15 | 0.003 | 0.001 | USD 0.001 | 0 less, 4 equal, 11 more |
| Logs, events and transfers | 24 | 18 | 0.005 | 0.001 | USD 0.003 | 2 less, 3 equal, 19 more |
| ENS resolution | 46 | 34 | 0.004 | 0.001 | USD 0.002 | 7 less, 5 equal, 34 more |
| Token metadata and supply | 42 | 33 | 0.003 | 0.001 | USD 0.003 | 12 less, 12 equal, 18 more |
| eth_call, storage, raw JSON-RPC | 30 | 19 | 0.003 | 0.001 | USD 0.002 | 6 less, 4 equal, 20 more |
| Gas price and fee estimate | 106 | 87 | 0.003 | 0.001 | USD 0.001 | 0 less, 28 equal, 78 more |
Bundles that return a native balance plus tokens in one call are their own row because Tanod's /v1/chain/balance returns one asset per call. Hosts can appear in several groups, so the host counts do not add up to 136.

Method
- Source: Tanod's agent index of the CDP x402 Bazaar and PayAI, snapshot 2026-10-09 (newest listing seen 2026-10-09T04:31:37Z). The MCP registry and Smithery carry no per-call price and are not used. Internal-only sources are not used, and no listing from a source whose name mentions Circle is used.
- Match: listings with a price, last seen on or after 2026-10-06, whose URL path, name or description describes an EVM read in one of the groups above: native or ERC-20 balances, block and chain info, transactions and receipts, nonces, logs and transfer events, ENS, token metadata and supply, eth_call, storage and JSON-RPC passthrough, and gas. Matched by path and text patterns, then reviewed by hand, so a few edge cases were judged one way or the other and matching is a judgement call.
- Excluded: swaps, trading, token launches and sniping, risk, safety, honeypot, reputation and sanction scores, transaction simulation, portfolio and wallet-profile or analytics bundles, address history explorers, contract ABI, proxy and verification lookups, calldata decoders, allowance audits, price and TVL feeds, bridges, non-EVM chains (Solana, Bitcoin, Cosmos, Starknet and others), chain-specific L1s outside the Ethereum family such as Arc, and listings whose description is empty or generic. Tanod's own routes (tanod.dev) are not counted.
- Listing farms: five bulk-catalogue hosts (market.datapackvibe.com, api.delx.ai, a code.run gas-station host, blockrun.ai and mpp.hyreagent.fun; 80 to 3,000 templated listings each in the window) are left out. The rule: a host whose listings are mass-generated from a template and mostly unrelated to chain reads. Their keyword matches came from words such as base, gas and storage, and none held an EVM read after inspection.
- Deduplicated: the same host serving one operation under several paths, languages or chains (per-chain aliases, localised paths, premium and basic tiers of one description) counts once, at its lowest listed price; the same description under several hosts also counts once. 616 priced listings became 459 offers.
- Quartiles use linear interpolation. Listed price is the first payment requirement; some endpoints charge differently by input, and listings can be stale or wrong. The count depends on the match rules above; a looser rule finds more, a stricter one fewer.
Where Tanod fits
Tanod has sixteen read-only chain routes for Ethereum and Base, priced USD 0.001 to 0.003 per call. The full set is in the Ethereum and Base RPC reads guide; the balance, ENS, token, gas and block routes also have their own guides.

/v1/chain/estimate-gas | estimate_gas | eth_estimateGas | 0.002 |
Tanod also has chain routes outside the groups compared here (allowance, proxy detection, calldata decoding, block at a timestamp, NFT and price reads); they are not in the numbers above.
When a priced listing above is the better choice
- You need chains beyond Ethereum and Base. Many listings cover Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism and BNB Chain, and some pass JSON-RPC through for 20 or more chains.
- You need a raw JSON-RPC passthrough for any method. Tanod wraps specific reads (call, storage, estimate-gas, logs) rather than a generic proxy.
- You want native and token balances for several chains, or several wallets, in one call and one price.
- You need USD values, labels or parsed transfer summaries added to the read. Tanod returns on-chain data without prices.
When Tanod fits
- You want a nonce, block, gas, chain info or storage read at the bottom of the listed range: those routes cost USD 0.001, the same as the cheapest listed offers, and none of the 459 listed offers is below it.
- You want 1,000 gas or block reads for USD 1.00, against USD 3.00 at the median listed offer.
- You want each answer to be the node's own data in compact JSON, on routes that are validated before payment and are never charged when the node call fails.
- You want to try it first: free daily calls per IP with the header
