What MCP servers expose: a census of 14,000 live tool lists
What 14,191 live remote MCP servers say they offer when asked for their tool list: counts, naming, themes and how much of it is one template. Aggregates only; the method is below.

Key figures
- 87.2% of 16,282 endpoints that had answered
initializealso listed tools; the commonest failure was a 4xx on the follow-up request. - One template accounts for 2,360 servers (16.6% of those that listed). Without the mass templates the median server exposes 6 tools and the 90th percentile is 24.
- Hosting is concentrated: the largest registrable-domain group holds 20.2% of servers that listed, and 6,887 of 7,271 domains host exactly one.
- Search is the most common theme by tool name (4,453 servers outside the templates); 47% of tools carry annotations such as read-only or destructive hints.
Method
The input is the official MCP Registry's remote (streamable-http) URLs that answered initialize in Tanod's liveness pass, described in State of the MCP Registry. Each got one initialize and one tools/list request and nothing else. No tool was ever called. Replies were capped at 512 KB, each server had a 20 second deadline, and at most two requests were in flight per host. Only aggregates are published here: no server address, host, domain or operator is named, and a tool name appears only if it is on at least 20 servers.

A template here is a set of at least 5 tool names shared, as the same set, by at least 100 servers. 4 such groups exist, covering 3,724 servers (26.2%). The two large ones, with 2,360 and 1,109 servers, are excluded from the "excluding mass templates" columns (3,469 servers); the small ones are listed but not excluded. The largest has 2,360 servers sharing an identical 30-tool core. Checked by marker tool names, 2,360 servers carry the first group's markers and 1,109 the second's. Statistics below are given for all servers and excluding the two large groups.

This is a name-keyword heuristic, not a classification of what the tools actually do: it misses tools with unrevealing names and can match unrelated ones. Servers outside the mass templates only; a server can appear in several rows.
