N2YO alternative: a satellite and ISS pass API without an account
Updated 2026-10-08
The N2YO REST API is a long-running, free satellite tracking API. Tanod's /v1/space/passes answers one question, when a satellite passes over a point, and needs no key. This page shows where each fits.
At a glance
| N2YO API | Tanod /v1/space/passes | |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | TLE, positions, visual passes, radio passes and "what's above" endpoints, by NORAD ID. | Passes only. ISS (default), CelesTrak "stations" and "visual" groups, NOAA 15, 18 and 19. Another NORAD ID is a 422. |
| Window | Up to 10 days for visual and radio passes. | 1 to 3 days; at most 40 passes. |
| Access | Free, but an API key from a registered account is required on every request. | No key or account. x402 payment or free tier. |
| Rate limits | Per hour: 100 for visual passes, radio passes and "above"; 1,000 for TLE and positions. | Pay per call; 5 free calls per IP per day. |
| Visibility | Visual passes endpoint, with a minimum visibility argument. | visible flag (satellite sunlit and sky dark) with a reason such as sky_too_bright. |
| Data basis | See N2YO. | SGP4 from CelesTrak elements, fetched at most every 2 hours. |
When to choose N2YO
- You need positions, TLEs, radio passes, "what's above me", longer windows, or satellites outside our list.
- You want a free API and are happy to register for a key, with a documented hourly limit.
- You want to stay with an established service that has a documented API and hourly limits.
When to choose Tanod
- An agent or script needs a quick answer for the ISS or a weather satellite without registering for a key.
- You prefer a flat per-call price over an hourly cap, or want a single request that returns local times, compass directions and a visibility flag.
- The ISS, CelesTrak stations/visual groups or NOAA 15/18/19 are all you need.
These are predictions, not observations. A prediction is only as fresh as the last element set. When our orbital cache is cold, a call can take up to a minute or more and may return a 503, which is not charged.
Pricing as of 2026-10-08
N2YO (from its API page, 2026-10-08): free, limited by transactions per hour per endpoint; higher volume by contacting the site.
Tanod (from openapi.json): USD 0.002 per call, paid in USDC on Base or Polygon with x402. 5 free skypeek calls per IP per UTC day with X-Tanod-Free: 1.
